Air Conditioning Installation in Hackney

IcyHomes installs air conditioning across Hackney, mostly in Victorian terraces, converted flats and lower-ground floors where space is tight and neighbours are close. Those constraints decide most of what follows.

Dense housing, little room for plant

Hackney is the most constrained place we work. Terraces run in long unbroken rows, side returns are narrow or already built on, rear elevations are overlooked from several directions, and a great many houses have been divided into flats. Warehouse and workshop conversions add another type again, with high ceilings, single glazing and vast windows.

None of this prevents a good installation. It does mean the survey matters more here than anywhere else, because the answer depends almost entirely on what the building will physically allow.

Basements and lower-ground floors

Dug-out basements and lower-ground conversions are common in Hackney and they bring a particular problem: no cross-ventilation, limited natural light, and often a damp, heavy feel in summer that opening a window does nothing for. Air conditioning handles both the temperature and the humidity, which is the part people tend not to expect.

Because these rooms usually have a finished ceiling with a void above, they suit a ducted system particularly well. The unit sits out of sight and all that shows is a slim linear grille.

Flats, freeholders and consent

Where a house has been converted, the obstacle is rarely the building and nearly always the lease. Fixing a condenser to an external wall or running pipework through common parts normally needs written consent from the freeholder or managing agent, and that takes considerably longer than the installation itself.

Start that conversation early. We can supply the technical detail they usually ask for, including where the unit sits, its noise rating and how it is mounted.

Noise, and the neighbour question

On a Hackney terrace the outdoor unit is feet from someone else's window. A condenser that is merely acceptable in a detached garden can be a genuine nuisance here, and it is an expensive thing to put right after the pipework is in.

We site units to discharge away from boundaries and bedroom windows, fit anti-vibration mounts as standard, and specify quieter equipment on tight plots even when a cheaper unit would meet the cooling load on paper.

Conservation areas

Hackney has a lot of conservation areas and a good number of listed buildings. This usually affects whether a condenser may go on a visible elevation rather than whether you can have one at all, and the practical result is that the unit goes to the rear, at ground level, or on a flat roof. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, confirm the position with the London Borough of Hackney before work is booked. We will raise it at survey if we think it applies.

Loft rooms and rear extensions

The warmest rooms in a Hackney terrace are almost always the loft conversion and the rear kitchen extension. One sits under the roof with the least ventilation, the other has the glazing. See our loft conversion page, and our garden rooms and home offices page if you have a studio or office in the garden.

Cost

A single-room installation starts from GBP 1,500 to GBP 1,800 including VAT, subject to survey, and is usually a day on site. Where access is genuinely awkward we will say so at survey and price it properly rather than discovering it on the day. Our cost page sets out what is included.

Book a survey in Hackney

Given how much turns on access, consent and unit siting here, the survey is worth having even if you are only comparing prices. It is free and carries no obligation. Get in touch or call 020 3488 4657.

We also cover the surrounding areas across north east London and west Essex.
