Air Conditioning Installation in Buckhurst Hill

IcyHomes installs air conditioning in Buckhurst Hill, where most of the work is in period terraces and semis with limited outside space and close neighbours. Those two constraints shape nearly every job here, so this page deals with them directly.

Period houses, narrow plots

Much of Buckhurst Hill is Victorian and Edwardian: terraces and semis on the roads off Queens Road and Palmerston Road, with bay fronts, decorative brickwork and narrow side returns. A good number have been converted into flats, and many of the houses have been extended at the rear.

These are lovely buildings to work in and awkward ones to fit plant to. The side return is often barely wide enough to walk down, the rear elevation may be overlooked on both sides, and the front is usually the last place anyone wants a condenser. The job is almost always solvable, but it needs looking at properly rather than quoting from a floor plan.

Keeping period features intact

The thing owners of these houses care about most is that the installation does not spoil the room. Cornicing, picture rails, panelled doors and original fireplaces are the reason people buy here, and a badly placed indoor unit in the middle of a chimney breast ruins the look of a room permanently.

In practice this means siting indoor units above door height, in a corner, or on the wall that has least decorative detail, and running pipework in the void or externally rather than chasing it through original plaster. Where the building work allows, a ducted system removes the question entirely by hiding the unit and showing only a grille.

Noise and neighbours

On a terrace, where an outdoor unit goes and how loud it is at two in the morning matters more than anywhere else we work. A condenser mounted on a party wall, or discharging straight at a neighbour’s bedroom window, causes problems that are expensive to put right once the pipework is in.

We site units to discharge away from boundaries and bedroom windows wherever the building allows, use anti-vibration mounts as standard, and specify quieter equipment on tight plots even where a cheaper unit would meet the cooling requirement. It is worth the difference.

Conservation areas

Parts of Buckhurst Hill fall within conservation areas, which can affect whether an outdoor unit may be fixed to a visible elevation. This does not prevent an installation, but it does tend to push the condenser to the rear or to ground level. If your property is in a conservation area or is listed, confirm the position with Epping Forest District Council before work is booked, and we will raise it at survey if we think it applies.

Flats and converted buildings

Where a house has been split into flats, the practical obstacle is usually the lease and the freeholder rather than the building. Fixing a condenser to an external wall, or running pipework through common parts, normally needs written consent. It is worth starting that conversation early, because it takes longer than the installation does.

Loft rooms and rear extensions

The two warmest spaces in a Buckhurst Hill house are nearly always the converted loft and the rear kitchen extension. The loft sits under the roof with little ventilation; the extension has the glazing. A single well-sited unit usually handles either. See our loft conversion page and our garden rooms and home offices page.

Cost

A single-room installation starts from GBP 1,500 to GBP 1,800 including VAT, subject to survey, and is normally a day on site. Multi-room systems are priced individually. Where access is genuinely difficult we will say so at survey and price it honestly rather than discovering it on the day. Our cost page sets out what is included.
